I've decided to blog, not because I have exciting things to talk about. It was more of a "Meh, why not. I sit in front of the laptop the whole day anyway" kind of thinking.

The holidays have been EXACTLY how I predicted.

10% of the time meeting friends/ doing exciting stuff
10% running errands and handling boring procedural stuff e.g. update passport/driver's license/bank FD
5% hanging out with XinWei
0.005% hanging out with XinKit (Yeah, he's this 16 year old that happens to have the same biological parents I have, yet turned out completely different from me, such that I do not talk to him, unless we are arguing).
10% spending quality time with Mum
0.5% spending quality time with Dad (thank you machinery at the electrical plant that decided to throw a tantrum just as my Dad is coming home to spend Christmas, I only saw my Dad for 4 days this year thanks to you.)
Remaining time is spent sleeping, and on the internet.

What I do on the Internet:
Play FB games e.g. Country Story, Pet Society, CafeWorld, Restaurant City, almost any game you can think of. Except FarmVille.
Read Fanfiction.
Play Pyramids on Neopets.
Check e-mails (99% junk, 1% from my Dad)
Read Asian entertainment news
Read and update Twitter
Read manga
Play FB games again

So people in Melbourne, don't get too jealous of me.

Nice that she did more than being the musical guest :)

I would blog....

But I just can't be bothered to.

Was going to try to take a picture of this HUGE sign they placed outside our shop to advertise that we are open till 10 pm on weeknights, but they moved it away before I brought my camera to work. Oh well. Just imagine one of those giant LED boards they use to inform you of construction on the roads, or road blocks, just not on the road but parked in a parking spot in front of my shop. Like the big red, yellow and blue ticket stub high in the sky wasn't attention-grabbing enough.

Sorry people.

More Trailers

Prince of Persia! Brings back many memories. Used to play this ALL THE TIME!!!! Even my mum, lol!
Always died at this one point where you have to drink a combination of potions.
Used to scare myself just thinking about the sound that plays when you die at that point.
Crap, just scared myself.

Been waiting for this trailer for the looooongest time!

But hey! No Leighton Meester in the trailer at all. Shucks.

Can you figure out why this movie would appeal to me?

Yeah, didn't recognise him either.

Seems funny.

It's Giselle! I mean Amy Adams.

"Someone call a vet, coz these puppies are sick!"

Christmas shopping = torture

So far I've settled 3 presents out of 14. Just shoot me. It's hard enough trying to guess what a person would want for their birthday, but when you have to do it for ALL of them at the same bloody time in a shopping centre that is so brightly lit it hurts your eyes and when christmas carols are playing over and over and over again, it's just impossible.

With that said, I will still try to finish my shopping on time, preferably before heading home on the 16th of December.

Suggestions for presents are very much welcome, as long as it's:
a. within my budget
b. not anything to do with twilight
c. not lingerie
d. not sex paraphernalia (I'm not buying anyone a blowup doll for Christmas!!)

Only good thing I can say about Christmas shopping (other than imagining the happy smiles on everyone's faces when they open the present I thoughtfully got for them, coz that's sappy) is that it's actually giving me something to do.

Which is good, since I'm perpetually bored out of my mind.

Just have to remind myself of this point when I'm actually doing Christmas shopping.

So Very Happy

Post-holiday jubilant-ness!!

Long Time No See!

Hello everyone!

Somehow I'm getting tired of blogging. So much more tedious than tweeting. Maybe I should swap permanently to Twitter and force all you readers to get an account and follow me so I'll be more popular there!

Just kidding guys.

Though I definitely would not mind anyone going on Twitter and following me. My account: http://twitter.com/uynix

There's also a Follow Me on Twitter button on the right ---->

Admittedly, it IS hard to fit everything you want to say into 140 characters. I mean, replying someone would already mean about 5-10 characters are wasted. God forbid the person has a looooong username eg. Celine aka celinemlchu. Or shitmydadsays. The latter's actually getting a book and TV deal just from posting what his 73-year old father says. Seriously.

Exams are finally over, this is DEFINITELY the toughest semester yet. My workmates all try to comfort me by telling me it's the hardest semester, and that it only gets easier from here. Hmmm. I will tell you if that's true in 2 years' time.

Papers in decreasing difficulty: Pharmaceutics (hardest, thanks to Peter Stewart) > Pharmacy Practice (Louis Roller's ethics question came close to PS) > Clinical Pharmacy > Pharmacology > Med Chem (thank you my awesome MedChem course coordinator for re-using questions)

Am planning post-exam activities to maximise my day. For example, I spent 5 hours at the karaoke lounge with XinNee, Jeremy, PeiXian, ChuJie and JiaHong belting tunes at the top of our lungs, some as old as we are, some as recent as last week. Oh, and not forgetting Jeremy's performance of dancing to "Sorry, Sorry", which I made him promise to do since before Paper No.4 aka Pharmaceutics.

The high lasted throughout dinner (for CJ, JH and me at least), and also the post-dinner walk to Freddo's for a much needed gelati. Green tea + green tea for CJ, green tea and durian for JH, lychee and lemon for me. Post-gelati walk was where we ended up agreeing to the idea of having a flashmob in Fed Square for CJ's birthday next year (I know, what did we get ourselves into?!)

For those who don't know, this is a flashmob:

What was supposed to be a short discussion about something I cannot put here on my blog, ended up being a 3 hour long chit-chatting session about relationships. Nice.

Conclusively, it's been a good start to post-exam celebrations, if you ignore the fact that I went to work after my exam Thursday morning on 4 hours of sleep.

Tomorrow's plan: To buy me the J. Society Enigma Low Super Slim Bleach Jeans from Just Jeans tomorrow. Then off to the MYER Christmas Parade (34 degrees tomorrow though), followed by a trip to Bardot's factory outlet store to shop. Hope that all works out.

New York, I Love You

Like Love Actually, but less Christmas-y, and missing hot English accents, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Hey there guys. Not much real blogging nowadays. Probably because there isn't a way for me to update you all about my life without me falling asleep typing out, my life is THAT boring right now. Uni, work, studying for exams, watching TV shows on my laptop.

Plus, I haven't had any epiphanies to share. Kinda hard to have one when you're doing the same thing day after day. Unless you count last night where I had an epiphany about not having epiphanies. Or the one where it suddenly occurred to me that chocolate mooncake with peanut filling tastes a lot like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

Hopefully I'll feel less dead when exams are finished, and I go home and see my family :) Did I mention my brother got into UWA? Oh, and that he's awesomely cool now! Looks like IMU's doing wonders for him, not study-wise since he seems to be hating pathology. He's joined a mountain climbing and hiking club, started jogging, and is actually out most of the time with friends! So hard to catch him nowadays, be it on MSN or by phone. Busy bee that one is. As compared to me. I feel 20 years older than him now.

So hang in there my loyal readers! I will, hopefully, be back.

Like Terminator.

Or herpes. Not that I've had them.

Broken - Lifehouse

The broken clock is a comfort, it helps me sleep tonight
Maybe it can stop tomorrow from stealing all my time
And I am here still waiting though I still have my doubts
I am damaged at best, like you've already figured out

I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
With a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain there is healing
In your name I find meaning

The broken locks were a warning you got inside my head
I tried my best to be guarded, I'm an open book instead
And I still see your reflection inside of my eyes
That are looking for purpose, they're still looking for life

I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
With a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain there's the healing
In your name I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on,
I'm holdin' on,
 I'm holdin' on
I'm barely holdin' on to you

 I'm hanging on another day
Just to see what you will throw my way
And I'm hanging on to the words you say
You said that I would, would be ok
The broken lights on the freeway left me here alone
I may have lost my way now, haven't forgotten my way home

I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
With a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on,
I'm holdin' on,
 I'm holdin' on,
I'm barely holdin' on to you

One Of The Boys - Katy Perry

I saw a spider, I didn't scream
'Cause I can belch the alphabet
Just double-dog dare me 'cause
I chose guitar over ballet
And I tape these suckers down
'Cause they just get in my way

The way you look at me
Is kind of like a little sister
You high-five your goodbyes
And it leaves me nothing but blisters

'Cause I don't wanna be
One of the boys
One of your guys
Just give me a chance
To prove to you tonight
That I just wanna be
One of the girls
Pretty in pearls
Not one of the boys

So over the summer, something changed
I started reading Seventeen and shaving my legs
And I studied Aveda religiously
And I walked right into school
And caught you staring at me, 'cause

I know what you know
But now you're gonna have
To take a number
It's okay, maybe one day
But not until you give me my
Diamond ring

'Cause I don't wanna be
One of the boys
One of your guys
Just give me a chance
To prove to you tonight
That I just wanna be
Your Homecoming Queen
Pin-up poster dream
Not one of the boys

I wanna be a flower, not a dirty weed
I wanna smell like roses, not a baseball team
And I swear, maybe, one day
You're gonna wann make out, make out
Make out with me

Don't wanna be, don't wanna be
Don't wanna be, don't wanna be
Don't wanna, don't wanna

'Cause I don't wanna be
One of the boys
One of your guys
Just give me a chance
To prove to you tonight
That I just wanna be
One of the girls
Pretty in pearls
Not one of the boys

Replies to When I Introduce Myself

"So you pronounce it like sin? I can't call you that! It'll be like calling you murder or something!"

"Oh hi XinYu! Now I've SEEN YOU!"

"XinYu? Like that rich brat in Doraemon?"

"My mother always told me not to do sin, but I never understood why she would say that. Now I know" - that was Dilshad being his normal self.

"Is it like that Jay Chou song?" (Jeremy used to sing "Heart Rain" when someone called my name out)

"New fish?"

"Sorry, I can't pronounce that"

...and many more.

Placement 1: Community

I must admit I was very pessimistic about this placement at the start, but I'm happy to announce that I absolutely love my placement!

Well, if you ignore the assessment forms and reflective report and debrief session things.

Anyway, placement's been good! After 4 days I'm actually fitting right into the environment. Compared to Chemist Warehouse, this place is much quieter and more involved with the community in a way, since we're less busy and manage to interact with the customers more. Plus, we have an awesome ORT program, but more about that later.

My preceptor is the owner of the pharmacy, and he's a very friendly person, as well as the rest of the staff, which definitely helped me fit in. Luckily the pharmacy uses LOTS, which meant I didn't have to learn anything new in terms of dispensing. They still use the old kind of ancillary labels, lol! People who come in are mostly long-standing customers, many of whom have scripts on file and are more than happy to come back in a few minutes if we're busy or sit down and wait for their medications and chat to the other customers or the staff.

Just a few hours ago, the local butcher actually dropped by with some meat for the staff. LOL. First time in my life seeing a whole leg of pork.

The pharmacy's relatively quiet, but much of our time is dedicated to the opioid replacement therapy. I wasn't too worried about it, after the harm minimisation talks, but of course there was still a slight sliver of fear that one of them could turn nasty. That fear was soon destroyed after I went in and started helping out with the program. I find these people even nicer than the normal customers sometimes! They're much more patient and rarely complain, plus they always thank us before leaving. For example, a guy came in for his suboxone today, which had to be placed under the tongue. I gave him the crushed tablets and waited for him to take it but he kept holding on to it. He saw me looking at the cup in his hand and explained that he didn't want to take it till the pharmacist got off the phone so he could thank him, as with the tablets in his mouth he wouldn't have been able to talk! How nice is that?! The other pharmacist who works there, James Spence, works in Turning Point when he's not at the pharmacy, and has gotten me quite interested in doing a short summer internship with them..... Another thing that I found great about the place is that they do not bother hiding the ORT customers and trying to sneakily slip them their medications. Instead, they do it as if there is nothing wrong with taking methadone, which I think helps remove the stigma people have about it. Due to that attitude, the customers who are there when someone is getting their dose just behave like normal, interacting with these people too! I guess their position on this is "There's nothing to hide, so we're doing it in the open, if you don't like it don't visit our pharmacy"

Have I talked you into doing a placement in this pharmacy? LOL!

P.S. My preceptor has Facebook!

My New Pasttime

For people who have nothing better to watch, Australian TV has this amazing show called the Gruen Transfer. The show discusses tactics employed by advertisers to make us choose their brand. My favourite part of the show though, is The Pitch. In this segment, 2 advertising companies are pit against each other to come up with an advertisment to "sell the unsellable". Don't understand? See below:

Looking for the show that had this as the ending song. Remember watching it and thinking about it so much that I used to cry when listening to this song. Anyone able to help?

Se Von's Trip To Melby

Last Saturday, Melbourne was graced with the presence of my dear cousin Se Von, all the way from Perth and Josh, our friend from Sydney.

Sat: Take bus down to Doncaster around 11, meet everyone at my uncle's house. Ipoh Hor Fun for lunch, thanks to my uncle's awesome cooking skills. Teach a 9 year old how to play Big 2 and my 22 year old cousin how to play poker (the 9 year old knew how to play). Dinner: Peiking duck!!

Sun: Get up at 9 to find that Edmund (the 9 year old) has been up since 6. Make breakfast for him and Ashley (13 year old) while waiting for others to get up. Head to Doncaster Shoppingtown where we introduce Se Von to the wonderful world of Smiggle. Apparently Perth has NOTHING. Lunch is at my aunt's parents' house, had Ipoh Curry Laksa :) Discuss the various shows based on Hana Yori Dango e.g. Meteor Garden. Get CDs for My Girl, and am promised Boys Before Flowers the next time I drop by. Also discuss changes in the Pharmacy course with aunt's sister, who studied at VCP too. Apparently David Taylor and Louis Roller were already teaching there. Hm. Head home and use the internet (apparently the Chow/ Fong family is a Dell family) till dinner time where my uncle cooks Kung Foo Chow (god knows how it's spelled) for us XD. Chocolate souffle for dessert, thanks to Se Von.

Mon: Wake up bright and early to head back to the city since yours truly was due to have her Clinical Pharmacy presentation at 3. Reach the city around 11 and head to Safeway Woolworth's to buy some groceries. After dropping groceries off we head to Lygon street, specifically Lambs for lamb souvlakis. I then head to my presentation, and return to the city an hour later to meet Se Von and Josh in MYER. Dinner is at Woo Ga on Victoria Street, with Se Von's friend CS (5th year Actuarial Science) followed by dessert at Max Brenner where KK comes along :) I then stay up till 2 to finish my MMM assignment.

Tue: Up at 10, have breakfast and head up to give the two a tour of Melb Uni, where my Dad and our aunt studied. Visit the Bailieu library where my dad probably spent most of his time in. Head to Vic Market next to walk around. Visit the pet shop nearby to coo over little puppies. I head to uni for class till 4.30, then to Jeremy's place while waiting for my "housemates" to return from DFO. Dinner at Ying Thai with 2 of Se Von's friends, dessert at Freddo's. Tram down to Crown casino where I proceed to lose money, while Se Von takes a plastic Crown cup home. MMM assignment due the next day, so yours truly burned the midnight oil to finish it.

Wed: Send the 2 off at QV bus stop, where they travel back to Doncaster for lunch at Indochine with my aunt. I head off to uni and hand in my assignment, then take the bus down in the evening in time for dinner (Ban Mien by my aunt, since my uncle was out that night). Watch Transformers on DVD halfway (faulty CD) till midnight, end up talking to Josh till 2 since he was leaving at 5 the next morning. Se Von fell asleep during Transformers and was out for the night (Chow family genes for sleeping are strong in her)

Thu: Up at 6.45 to have breakfast and catch the 7.19 bus to the city, then tram up to uni for a 8.30 Pharmaceutics tutorial that they forgot to assign a tutor for. Finish at 12, then took a train down to be picked up at Box Hill for yumcha at Dragon Boat :) Head back to uncle's home, shower and it's off to work for me. Get picked up at 9, and dropped off at my apartment by my uncle, who was sending my cousin to the airport. Have supper with JacKee.

Do you feel tired reading all that? XD

Definitely a tiring week for me, but totally enjoyable since I got to hang out with my cousin whom I had not seen since summer, and Josh whom I hadn't seen since the start of Taylors. Walking around in a skirt while the 2 shivered behind me in 3 layers each was pretty amusing too :p

From Se Von, I gathered that Perth has no Krispy Kreme, Koko Black, Max Brenner, Smiggle, Kikki K and much more shops, which makes me very happy to be in Melbourne despite the cold.

P.S Pictures are from my aunt's Facebook, hence there are no pictures of their stay in the city. Will have to wait till Se Von posts the pictures from her camera.

I want to own a bakery

Should have taken up baking as a course instead. Instead of thinking about my assignments I find myself thinking about cookies and cakes and muffins and brownies all the time.

Just last week I felt too stressed from doing my Pharmacology presentation I went and made peanut butter cookies.

Which would I prefer? Standing on my feet for 8 hours everyday attending to customers who think it's their every right to throw a script at you then tap their feet impatiently for you while you tackle a mountain of scripts while answering the phone vs. owning my own bakery being surrounded by the aroma of freshly baked treats and seeing kids come in and gawk at my creations?

Too bad I've already made my choice 2 years ago....

Maybe it's the mental exhaustion from assignments talking. Ask me again when the year's over.

Things That Made Me Laugh Today

1. Xinnee and JiaHong singing Malaysian patriotic songs in class
2. "Tuilet" --> Indonesia's spoof on Twilight (Kush's book)
3. CJ not hearing my answer to her question of "Why are you in class if you're sick?" and asking me again after waiting a whole minute or two.
4. Aaron's absent-mindedness and the fact he bought Panadeine because he wanted something for his flu (??!)
5. Teasing my brother about his driving test tomorrow and the fact that he'll probably be fetching Kit to and from school once he gets his license, not to mention fetching me around when I'm home for summer.
6. A video of Tom Felton at 9 and realising he acted with Hugh Laurie at 9.

New show that I'm starting to like! Seen 2 out of the available 10 episodes and it's slowly growing on me. First started watching it when I stumbled upon it when channel surfing and went:

"Hey, isn't thaat CAPTAIN HAMMER?!"

Obviously I had to watch it.

Castle stars Nathan Fillon (Captain Hammer!!!!!!) as Richard Castle, who's a best selling novellist who shadows this cop (obviously she's female and smoking hot) and helps her with her cases. Definitely interesting, since the only time I saw Nathan Fillon acting was in Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog where I obviously hated him. And fleeting shots of him when watching "The Best of Two Guys and A Girl" youtube videos at the peak of my Ryan Reynolds infatuation.

Mmmmm Ryan Reynolds.

Sorry about that diversion. Back to Castle.

Hmmm can't say what is it about the show that's so interesting? I can't say... Nathan Fillon is definitely very good in the show, plus the idea of having a novelist following a cop around is amusing to say the least.

Try it out.

Some quotes:

Will Sorenson: How about you Castle, you've written what... 20 bestsellers?
Richard Castle: 26 but who's counting?
Will Sorenson: Why the sudden need to shadow a real detective?
Richard Castle: Well, the ones on TV seem oddly fixated on their sunglasses.

Richard Castle: Yin-Yang is harmony, Yin-Yin is... a name for a panda!

P.S Forgot Nathan Fillon was on Desperate Housewives.

Chocolate "Ice Cream" Cupcakes Recipe (finally)

Definitely the easiest recipe for cupcakes ever, plus the resulting cupcakes are so soft! Got the recipe from playinghouseblog.com which I found from foodgawker.com which showcases pictures of food from various cooking blogs (thanks Fangi for telling me about it!)

Chocolate "Ice Cream" Cupcakes

1 box chocolate cake mix (or any other flavor)
1 pint chocolate ice cream, softened (again, any other flavor)
3 eggs
1 c. water
Preheat oven to 350
Only 3 things to buy! 1 pint roughly translates to 480 ml of ice cream, and 350o is just about 180 degrees Celsius.

Step 1:
Assemble everything you need!
Step 2:
Prepare your cupcake/muffin tray by lining them with paper liners, or grease the sides (so much more troublesome than paper liners, I find)

Step 3:
Mix all the ingredients together! It's that easy!!

Step 4:
Beat everything together with a mixer for just FOUR minutes, which results in an extremely watery mixture. Don't worry, that's how it's supposed to be!

Step 5:
Pour the mixture into the cupcake tins. Since the mixture was so viscous, I literally POURED it into the tray. (Hint: Don't fill it up too full though, maybe around 50%? I found that the cupcake tended to deflate after coming out the oven, so if they had the normal "above the liner" dome it collapsed on itself and became VERY sticky)

Step 6:
Bake for 17 minutes.

Step 7:
Ta-Da! The resulting cupcakes weren't as sweet as the cupcakes I usually make, so you could add some sugar in the mixure, or make up a frosting to go on them! Nutella frosting would be awesome!

You can try it with other cake mixture or ice cream flavours eg. mint chocolate ice cream with vanilla cake mixture, and so on.

Alternatively, you could use the mixture for a cake or mini cupcakes, you just have to tweak the baking times: 12 minutes for mini cupcakes and 45 minutes for a cake.

Made 24 cupcakes out of this recipe, but could have made a few more if I didn't fill them up as full.
