Will You Be My Valentine?

When I was a lot younger, I used to dream a lot about Valentine's Day. It was something that I couldn't wait to experience it.

After I started dating, I was disappointed to discover Valentine's Day was not as magical as I thought it to be.

Mostly because my boyfriend and I could never be physically in the same place to celebrate the day.

This year is the 5th Valentine's Day I've seen since starting to date. Still no luck. LOL. Seems the day and I just aren't fated.

I'd like to think I've matured a lot since that first Valentine's Day I spent sulking away.

So here we go:

"Things I've Learned About Valentine's Day"

1. Valentine's Day isn't just about being with your husband/wife/fiancee/fiance/boyfriend/girlfriend. Valentine's Day is about love. Just love. Love for your parents, love for your kids, love for your best friend, love for your dog, any love. So call your mum, hug your dad, kiss your brother (not on the lips, that's just disturbing), tell your housemate (I love you Celine Pika-Chu!)

2. Valentine's Day is overrated. Sure, it's one out of 2 days a year you can demand that your boyfriend treat you like the queen you think you are (the other being your birthday, in case you were wondering), but why wait for this ONE day to express how you feel?

3. Like 梁静茹 sings, "其实爱对了人, 情人节每天都过". "If you're in love with the right person, Valentine's Day is everyday"

4. I'm not a fan of them big grand romantic gestures. To be honest, they make me feel embarrassed more than they touch me. I'd rather have 100 small gestures from the one I love throughout the year than a bouquet of roses and a nice dinner once a year.

5. Just because you don't have a significant other to spend Valentine's Day with doesn't mean you must be unhappy. Just because you have a significant other to spend it with doesn't mean you have to. Just because you have someone to spend it with and you spend it with aforementioned person doesn't mean you'll be happy. For example, I had a great Valentine's Day supper tonight with Celine, Bako and a new friend Melvin, and it's the best February 14th I've spent.

6. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to not expect too much, and just take the day as it goes.

CNY 2011 - Day 2

Okay, so the most unexpected people "liked" my previous post. Flattering, but unexpected.

I've been home for about 28 hours now and I've not eaten a single pineapple tart! What is going on?! Have I lost my taste for delicious CNY cookies after years of not gorging on them? *gasp* I do very well hope not.

Woke up to the persistent ringing of the doorbell by my parents, who managed to wake XinWei up to let them out of the apartment, but couldn't repeat the miracle for him to wake up to let them back in.

When I went to open the door groggily, I was greeted by my mother:

"eh girl ah, how come you're awake?"

Proceeded to enter XinWei's room to punch him for not staying awake to let my parents back in.

He didn't stir at all.

Spent the rest of the morning having my standard toast and milk tea, while enjoying the 8Days magazines Mum bought for me despite the fact that most of the magazine is no longer relevant to me.

First homecooked meal since being home! Mum decided to show me how to cook congee using the Smart cooker that seems to have captured the hearts of every female member of my extended family. Not one day goes by in the Chow family without talk of the Smart cooker.

"Do you know it only weighs 5.4kg?"

"So easy to cook soup? You just dump everything inside before you go to work and you can have hot steaming soup to drink for dinner when you get back!"

"Come come, let me show you how to cook Hainanese chicken in the Smart cooker!"

This is how much we love this Smart cooker: My immediate family alone is in possession of 3 of this magic appliance, one for me in Melbourne, one for XinWei in Sydney (which Mum is currently using in Subang), and Dad's getting one when he flies back to Taiwan.

There's also one with my KooMah, her 2 children each has one, my Aunty Selina has one, her son Shaun has one in Melbourne, my Koo Cheh has one, Aunty Beng Gnoh in Melbourne has one as well, though hers is currently not working, as she lamented to me the day before I flew home.

These Buffalo people should get us to be the spokes-family for this. Seriously.

Made an impromptu decision to head to 1Utama for a movie with XinWei before meeting ChuJie for dinner. Left at 1.35 from Subang for the 3 pm movie.

Obviously we didn't make it. Thank you Malaysian transport system.

No chance of catching the movie, so we decided to head to Carl's Jr. OH YEAH!

Would post a photo of the meal, but XinWei started eating before I could even reach for my bag to pull my camera out.

To cement our status as nerds, we sat in Carl's Jr for another hour or so playing Scrabble on my iPod.

Then we walked around a little, before finally giving up and settling down in MPH bookstore for an hour and a half.

My family's talent: Finding a bookstore wherever we go.

Another talent: Never coming out of a bookstore empty handed.

Had dinner with ChuJie, where we tried our very best to speak in English for the benefit of XinWei but failed miserably.

Sister-brother bonding time ended once we reached home, as the clutches of DOTA proved too strong.

Still tried my best and stubbornly played and sang along to Korean songs on my iPod while XinWei was playing. Korean songs and the sounds of killing on DOTA has now been proven to not go along at all.

Introduced Kit to pore strips and the oil absorbing sheets, which he reluctantly tried. He didn't like them, and was not at all impressed with the results. Meh.

CNY 2011 - DAY 1

Finally got to see Mum after 396 days apart. I would have cried, but we don't do crying at reunions in my family. Instead, the first line I uttered to my mum upon reaching KLIA was:

"eh, 小姐, 你们不是应该已经站在 arrivals hall 拿着 sign 来欢迎我吗？"

(eh, miss, shouldn't you two be here at the arrivals hall holding a sign to welcome me?"

The response was:

"girl ah, 我们还没有到啦，你 daddy 不认识路. 多十分钟就到, okay?"

(Girl, we're not there yet. Your dad doesn't know the way there. Give us 10 more minutes okay?"

20 minutes later, I was still waiting.....

Looking at our interaction, noone would believe I had been away for so long, lol!

I can still understand and speak MALAY. So proud of myself. LOL.

Had lunch at The Pavillion, followed by a lot of shopping.

So far I've bought 2 pairs of shoes, 1 vest, 2 tops, 1 pair of jeans, 1 purse.

Not to mention all the stuff Mum bought me throughout the year while awaiting my return.

I think I'm the first person who's willingly brought their parents to Asia Cafe for pool. Needless to say, Mum was appalled that her kids have been spending their after-dinner nights in Subang there.

Taught XinKit how to play pool to increase his social skills in the hopes that he gets more friends.

Dinner at Sakae Sushi in Subang Parade. Ahhh, I've missed being able to order anything I want to eat without worrying about the bill :)

Annoyed XinWei and XinKit with questions the whole dinner. Questions like:

"Would you rather give up all desserts or sashimi?"

"Would you rather give up rice or anything spicy?"

"Would you rather have no voice or no internet?"

They still played along, probably silently comforting themselves with the fact that I'm leaving in 6 days and they'll be safe until my graduation in June.

Two-Oh-One-Oh

This year:

I am thankful for...my parents. I have come to realise that not everyone has such caring and understanding parents as I do. So thank you to my lovely Mummy and Daddy :)

I promise to be... call more, update more, and not be overly immature on the rare occasions we do not agree on things.

I am thankful for... finally finishing my degree. 4 years later, I finally have that Pharmacy degree in hand and moving on the next stage in life.

I promise to continue working hard, because learning doesn't stop when the degree is in hand.

I am thankful for... having a job. A job where I enjoy my work, where I have fun and caring colleagues whom I look forward to seeing each day, is not easy to find.

I promise to work hard and study hard! Hopefully by this time next year I'll be blogging as a full fledged pharmacist XD

I am thankful for... KK. Someone who understands that I am a bitch and is willing to be with me despite it, is always a keeper.

I promise to be... more caring, more understanding, and less of a bitch.

I am thankful for... friends. I wouldn't have gotten this far without them. Especially my Pharmacy friends, who started off merely as classmates, but whom now I count on for so many things. Although it's a bit sad that we only talk about pharmacy related topics nowadays, I still love meeting up with you girls :) Special mention to my BFF/ housemate Celine, who's had to tolerate my untidiness for 2 years now!

I promise to be... be nicer to all of you and bitch less about work!

I am thankful for... health. I would say I've been relatively healthy this year, thankfully, hope that continues for the years to come!

I promise to... at least attempt to pick up at least one physical activity this year and to exercise a little more than right now (which is absolutely none)

犀利人妻 The Fierce Wife

Been watching this show lately. It's advertised as a family drama more than an idol drama, but I find that I'm actually liking this show a lot more than the other dramas I've watch this year. Does this mean my tastes has become more mature? LOL!

The opening and ending songs and sequences are very different as well, it slowly draws you in compared to other dramas that usually have an upbeat song to make you interested right from the start. Plus, the songs are by Freya Lin, whose voice I love!

Couldn't find the closing sequence from the show :(

Why We Need Korean Guys in Karaoke Sessions

1. They can help us select the Korean songs we want so we don't have to try and match characters on the screen to song titles on our iPod. (I gave up before finding a single song.)

2. Being guys, they will (hopefully) not fight with us for mike-time and leave us enjoying our Korean songs and our random matching of syllables to "sing" the song.

3. They can sing the songs for us while we enjoy dances by Pei Xian and Chu Jie.

4. They can dance for us too! E.g. Sorry sorry

5. They can join us for Korean dinner afterwards, and perhaps provide us with the courage to finally call out "Chogio!" to the waiting staff.

Sang this song at karaoke today. Oddly familiar yet foreign, because I know it as 寂寞光年 which was the theme song for 双子星 (The Ultimatum) which is a Singaporean drama I had to stream on xinmsn because I'm here in Melbourne and it had Tay Ping Hui in it.

At this point, I would strongly recommend you look for the lyrics to this song, as it's quite an interesting concept, but those who care probably already know about it and those who don't care still don't give a damn.

If you wanted to know anyway, it's the girl singing about a pair of shoes she received from her boyfriend before their relationship ended and she points out what an appropriate present it was since there's the superstition about gifting shoes and parting ways. ANYWAY if this doesn't make any sense, just go google it or something. Or skip to the next video.

Today, I earned 1000++ karma points for myself.

Or so I think I deserved to earn.

Went to work for Sze Wey in CWH Malvern today.

In conclusion, I have found that I'm wayyy happier just sticking to CWH Doncaster.

Not that CWH Malvern was bad or anything, but I'm just not comfortable working in a new environment.

Even if they are both CWHs, there's still small differences, things that doesn't cross your mind until you're facing the situation and the pharmacist is super busy and you're just left standing there hoping the patient doesn't complain about the wait and hoping the pharmacist quickly finishes what she's doing do you can ask her about it.

Felt like last year all over again, when I was a completely clueless noob at CWH Doncaster.

Nowadays, I'm ordering juniors around at night (hehehe ;p) so being the new girl all over again was uncomfortable, to say the least. All that second guessing myself, thought I was done with it already.

Apparently the pharmacist thinks I did pretty well. Heh.

Never again, I tell you. No matter how much they beg me.

Just got back from watching Inception. Am still buzzing from all the excitement you feel when you've watched a good movie! Which is pretty rare nowadays I tell you.

OMG Joseph Gordon Levitt!!! Let me tell you, it's very awkward trying to stop yourself from squealing at the sight of a hot guy on the screen when your boyfriend is next to you. I'm going to watch it again on my own so I don't embarrass myself. Or with Celine so we can squeal together.

I hate weapons and all, but JGL + gun = hot.

I don't know about you, but I hate it when you're supposed to meet up with someone and you call them to see where they're at and they tell you they're about to leave soon, when they're actually still lounging around with no intention to leave whatsoever but they just don't want to make you angry if you knew that they weren't ready yet.

Which to me is kind of silly because when I call them 1 hour later and they're STILL where they were when you last called, it fucking pisses me off more.

I'm not sure if it's a Malaysian thing, but if you are going to be late, should you not inform the person as soon as possible instead of waiting for the person to call you when you've missed the meeting time and go "oh....yeah....actually....I'm kind of not on the way yet....." It's as if these people think I do not own a single device that is capable of telling me the time, and I'm not going to notice that they're late. For your information, I have a watch, 2 handphones and 1 iPod which can tell me the time okay? Plus I check the time ALL THE TIME.

I'm sure everyone knows this story by now, since I love telling people how I was so traumatised by this incident, but I'm telling it anyway because it relates to the above topic.

When I was 11 and XinWei 10, we happened to be in Primary 6 and 4 respectively, which meant we were both in the morning session. Hence every Friday we would finish at 12.30, head home for lunch then head to Lynette's place for swimming back when she used to stay in her Stulang View apartment. Mum would drop us off 4 ish and come and pick us up at 5.30 just before she goes to fetch XinKit from school.

Usually Lynette's mum would come with us just to supervise us, as well as informing us of the time so we would be ready to go when Mum came around.

Now this one time, for whatever reason I cannot remember, Lyn's mum stayed upstairs while the 3 of us went to the swimming pool. So we swam and we splashed and we were having fun when suddenly I noticed Mum standing at the far corner of the swimming pool, where the parking bays were. I can't remember very clearly now, but she must have looked bloody pissed since XinWei and I just scrambled out of the water, grabbed our towels and belongings and sprinted to the carpark without even looking at each other. We ran to the parking bays just in time to see Mum's car pull out of the parking spot and drive towards the exit of the condominium. We ran after the car, just like any hero chasing his heroine in a movie. Mum stopped at the guardhouse to wait for the guard to lift the barrier, and we managed to catch up. And you know what? She DIDN'T UNLOCK THE DOOR for us to get in. Without looking at us, Mum just drove off. XinWei and I ended up sitting in front of the guardhouse just waiting, thinking Mum would just make a U-turn and get us. Nope, didn't happen. In fact, Mum's car appeared on the street in front of the condominium about 25 minutes later with XinKit in the backseat pointing at us with a baffled look on his face, wondering why his jie and his kor were in front of Lynette's house in half-wet clothes and their towels wrapped around them and straggly wet hair. Mum still didn't look at us, and drove off in the direction of home. By the time Mum came to get us, we had been waiting for a good 45 minutes, which felt infinitely longer to us, believe me.

I kid you not, but from that day on, even if I think I'm going to be 5 minutes late, you can see me picking up the phone to ring Mum and tell her about it.

I strongly advocate everyone to do this to your kids once in their lives so they don't take your time for granted. Perhaps if everyone's parents had done this, I wouldn't be so hopping mad right now that I'm blogging at 3.23 am.

First day here in Sydney... and it's awesome! Went to this Rocks Market, got to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House while walking there :)

Plenty of things to see at the market, the first section was mostly food and clothes, then it gradually moved to more decorative items. Most interesting stall in my opinion was this one where the lady was selling 3D stamps, which she made herself by cutting parts of 5 identical stamps to form a 3D version of the stamp. From 15 cent stamps she produced a framed handiwork selling for 95 bucks. WOW. Wanted to take pictures to show you all, but the glass of the frame spoiled the picture. Oddly, most stall owners didn't want me taking pictures of their products... I did sneak a few before they told me though, so they'll be up on Facebook soon.

Went to the Guylian cafe! OMG chocolate overdose! Had this dessert called 100% Pure Pleasure, which is definitely was! Chocolate mousse and panna cotta layers covered with a shiny Guylian chocolate ganache... Heavenly! Wei had the Guylian baked chocolate cake, which came with Raspberry ice cream. Had hot chocolate to go with it as well, which came as a jug of hot chocolate, which I had to pour into this big cup that had a piece of chocolate in it, which melted when the hot liquid was added.

Had dinner very late as a result of the filling afternoon tea at Guylian, so we only ate at 9.30pm. LOL. Most of the restaurants had closed by then, so we ended up in this Indonesian restaurant near XinWei's place. Most memorable thing about the place is it's sambal belacan, which is almost the same as the belacan my grandmother's friend used to make for us. FINALLY! Wei and I bought a jar each for 5 bucks to keep at home. Hehehe. Told Wei he'll have to bring more over for me every time he comes to Melbourne, since I don't expect it to last long in my fridge.

Alone in Wei's room now since he's ditched me for the World Cup finals at his friend's place. Will be having an early night tonight :)

Plans for tomorrow: Yours truly is going to pretend to be a new student at UNSW so I can get freebies at orientation in the university :)

Not sure how long it'll take me to even UNDERSTAND cancer, much less remember it for the exams.

After learning about depression from Assoc. Prof. Jennifer Marriot, I decided to see if I fulfilled any of the conditions.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV) criteria:

Major Depressive Episode

A. Five (or more) of the following symptoms have been present during the same 2-week period and represent a change from previous functioning; at least one of the symptoms is either (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of interest or pleasure.

Note: Do note include symptoms that are clearly due to a general medical condition, or mood-incongruent delusions or hallucinations.

(1) depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by either subjective report (e.g., feels sad or empty) or observation made by others (e.g., appears tearful). Note: In children and adolescents, can be irritable mood. Hmmm, nope.

(2) markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day (as indicated by either subjective account or observation made by others) Eh, not really.

(8) diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day (either by subjective account or as observed by others) Inability to concentrate. Most likely due to lecture theater being a SAUNA

(9) recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide EEEEEEK never

B. The symptoms do not meet criteria for a Mixed Episode. Hmmm, I do have certain bouts of hypomania. Maybe I should look into Bipolar instead.

C. The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Eh no.

D. The symptoms are not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or a general medical condition (e.g., hypothyroidism). I doubt too much chocolate makes you depressed....

E. The symptoms are not better accounted for by Bereavement, i.e., after the loss of a loved one, the symptoms persist for longer than 2 months or are characterized by marked functional impairment, morbid preoccupation with worthlessness, suicidal ideation, psychotic symptoms, or psychomotor retardation.CHOI!! TOUCH WOOD!

Conclusion: No depression! Might feel unhappy once in a while, but definitely doesn't qualify me as having depression. Seriously, people nowadays are too generous with the word depression. Once you feel unhappy, you're suffering from DEPRESSION.

If you do meet the criteria, go see your doctor! Very important to not ignore it!

I am now addicted to Uncle Toby's Oats. Yummy! The cup one is way more expensive than the sachet one, but I bought one so I can pour the sachet in and measure out exactly how much milk I need, coz it has a line on the side. Plus, it's lightweight and easy to clean, so I can take it when I'm on a rush.

Had one for breakfast, one for supper about 10 mins ago, and will most probably be having one for breakfast tomorrow again.

Things I Learned This Week

1. DUEs are damn hard.

2. You can be 95 and still remember every medication you take.

3. Apparently brushing your teeth and rinsing it out with mouthwash, then keeping your mouth closed for 15 minutes without any water or food intake makes your breath smell fresh for at least 12 hours. Haven't tried it out yet.

4. My Show Luo addiction has not ended yet. I dreamt of him last night. *cue eye rolling from everyone*

Present of the year goes to my dad (sorry KK), who wrote another Letter to my Daughter that left me desperately trying not to cry because I was reading it on a tram. He called me FOUR times throughout the day to wish me Happy Birthday, lol! Oh, and he bought me a Tiffany's pendant from my old wishlist XD

♥ &hearts &hearts to my dearest Mummy and my two brothers as well. My poor mummy was ill the days before and during my birthday! Mum told me the day after about how they were all set to head over to Melbourne to give me an awesome surprise for my birthday, but the plan had to be cancelled :( I still appreciate the thought and all the effort you must have put in :) We can always celebrate when you all come in December! Mum sent over a big care package containing earrings, scarves, Stabilo fineliners (as she does every birthday of mine since coming here) as well as a Mr Bean teddy bear, with a HANDWRITTEN happy birthday card from my brother Kit. WHOA. Even if you did get forced into writing it, thank you Chow Xin Kit. Mum didn't want to send over anything expensive (because Pos Malaysia... you know la) so she owes me a handbag when she comes over in December for graduation. Xin Wei only called me in the evening, after making me wait the whole day for it, but it was because he thought I was working. Which I was not. LOL. I forgive you anyway. You owe me a HUG!

On top of a lovely birthday scrapbook filled with well wishes from so many friends, I got my purple jelly Havaianas, IKEA magnetic board, Neil Patrick Harris, Ryan Reynolds, Leighton Meester, Colin Firth, Renee Zellweger, Show Luo, JJ Lin, Hugh Laurie and Tay Ping Hui! Okay, so they were just pictures, but still!

Not forgetting my lovely quirky housemate/BFF, who was very tolerant of having our apartment dominated by my friends, as well as her awesome Taboo puppet playing skills, which made me laugh all night long. Ask her about miming "Eating a banana" please. Can you believe we've known each other for 9 years now?! ♥ A big thank you to Bako as well, for attending my surprise :)

Muchos gracias to my uncle and family, especially my awesomely cool aunt, who bought me a lovely dinner in Gold Leaf Restaurant in Preston. Had oysters, sharkfin soup, crab, and a MACAROON CAKE! Plus my aunt had to collect all my presents that were being mailed, since I was away in Geelong. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my uncle Kok Wai, who had to give the limelight to me even though we share the same birthday. When you turn 50, I'll give 100% of the limelight to you! He only touched down in Melbourne that morning, so he was really exhausted. Thank you!

Lots of love to my relatives, who sent me presents via my uncle, who stopped over in KL. My "koomah", "kucheong", "suksuk", Auntie Selina, and "kucheh" who didn't forget about me even though I have not seen them in ages! Not forgetting my cousins KaiVin, SeVon and Shaun :) Shaun "gave" me a present as well, although it was sent from Malaysia even though he's here in Melbourne. Plus the card was in his mother's handwriting. LOL.

WOW. I am actually blogging about my placement DURING my placement. Chu Jie will be pleased to see that she has something new to read from me.

Soooo, who actually read my previous post in its entirety? Won't blame you if you didn't, even I could not be bothered to look at it once I was done. LOL.

Geelong has been pretty good! Except the weather, which has been gloomy most days and rainy as well. Thankfully, the accomodation we were provided with is just opposite the hospital. YAY for sleeping in!

Am here with Natalie, Jennifer, Petty, Rex, Hin, Lieu and Christine. Don't ask me their last names, I don't know!! We're in individual rooms down one of the hallway, so it's pretty much dominated by us. Muahahahah!! Jen and I are in paediatrics, Rex and Petty in Renal, Hin and Christine in Infectious Diseases/General Medicines, Lieu in ICU and Nat in EMD. So far everyone's been pretty happy with where they are, and how their pharmacist is. Nat has to go to work at 7 am though, so she hates us a little.

We cook dinner together most nights, though Petty is so efficient in doing everything dinner is ready before we even head to the kitchen to help out. We have 1 hour lunches from 1-2 so everyone comes back to Kitchener House and makes sandwiches. We eat in the communal living room, where the TV is. During lunch it's Oprah, and dinner time it's usually Simpsons cartoons, followed by MasterChef.

Out of the 8 of us, Petty, Rex, Lieu, Jen, Nat and I are addicted to MasterChef! Dinner and showers and studying revolves around the show, which is hilarious! Most of us are rooting for Callum, and we hate Matthew (because he is the only person who does not do anything in the promo, except looking smug). I personally like Alvin too :)

Paediatrics has been a pretty good placement. Our pharmacist, Lisa is really nice! She's always teaching us stuff and letting us handle things, like medication interviews and dispensing and all that. Though, it can get a bit boring in the ward since there's rarely any complicated medical problems with the kids. Usually the kids are admitted for asthma exacerbations, or broken/ fractured limbs. We take care of the special care nursery too, so once every 2 days we go and see cute little babies. Some of them haven't even been named! We call them by their surname, so it goes "Smith, baby of Joan". Thankfully there haven't been any kids with cancer or anything really serious, or I'll be bawling my eyes out in the middle of placement! Sometimes when it's quiet in the ward, Lisa allows us to just go research something for our case studies, or have a longer break XD SO NICE RIGHT?! She'll be on leave for the last week though, so I'm hoping the replacement pharmacist is as nice as her. Not too worried though. People who work with kids should be nice right? Right?

Am learning a lot about asthma, especially about management. Almost everyone in the ward is taking Redipred and Ventolin!

Petty brought Monopoly Deal, so now there's 4 of us who play it at night. LOL. She and her boyfriend Steven, added a lot of rules though, which makes it more interesting to play! Though I'm scared I'll forget how to play the original way when I get back.

Birthday Presents

I've thought of another item for my wishlist.

It's one issue of 8Days.

Don't worry, it only costs 2 Singaporean dollars. Or 4.60 Ringgit, when I used to buy it.

Ahhh, but there is a catch.

You see, it's a specific issue that I want. One from back when I was in high school. Form 5, to be exact.

I remember this issue fondly, because it brings back memories of everything I loved most about my life in Form 5.

Firstly, it brings back memories of going to Plaza Pelangi after classes on Friday to have lunch and shop around before going to Omega for tuition.

We had the routine down pat.

The night before, everyone (usually Lynette, Fangi, Melissa, you-know-who, and I) would decide what school shirt to bring to school to change into for tuition. The Agape Sempre Fidelis from our 2004 Christmas Concert was my favourite.

Friday afternoon, we'll all meet up at the school gate and be picked up by someone's mother (I forgot who, sorry!), and dropped off at Plaza Pelangi just before the office block. Then it was time to decide what to have for lunch. Usual suspects: Vivo, Secret Recipe, McDonalds (especially if they had curly fries for Fangi). Shopping came after, usually to Popular, and definitely a stop at Ideal Collection for yours truly to buy her star making paper. Then a stop at the newsagent on the 2nd floor to buy 8Days, as BM with Roslan just wouldn't be complete without it.

NB: After a while, my mum told my newspaper delivery man to drop it off during his newspaper route every week. Tuesdays became my favourite day to come home and find my beloved magazine already on the table. Except the annual bikini issue, thanks to the Malaysian censorship authority.

Anyway. After procuring the essential ingredient, off we were to Omega at 2.10 to grab a good spot for our tuition that started at 2.30pm. Which never worked anyway, since we were almost always at the back. If Malaysian drivers were as nice as Australian drivers, I would be reading the magazine while crossing the roads. But they aren't, so I had to restrain myself for the sake of not becoming XinYu soup to fill the potholes.

BM with Roslan from 2.30-4.30 was not spent learning Malay, we just made sure we got the handouts and instead devoted our time to reading 8Days and folding stars. Sorry parents! To our defense, the air conditioning was working so hard we couldn't actually write.

Oh, and we got A1s anyway.

Another thing that this 8Days issue reminds me of, is the love for Singaporean TV that seemed to be ingrained into the minds of every teenage girl. I swear I've never watched TV1, 2, and 3 for more than 2 hours in my life combined. I've watched the Singaporean National Day Parade every year that I was in JB, and only once have I actually watched the national day celebrations of my own country. I've probably heard the Singapore anthem more often than that of my own country, and that's including all the times I sang it in school assemblies AND during choir practice.

If my dad had brought me to Singapore more often, I would definitely be calling myself an honorary Singaporean.

Ahhh Channel 8 and Channel 5 (I don't watch Channel U, sorry). During my high school life, my conversations with my friends went something like this: 10% about school, 50% about boys, and the remaining 40% was about Singaporean TV.

"Did you watch last night's episode of ___? OMG it was epic!"

"OMG, ___ is so evil! I can't believe he did that to his own brother's best friend's mother's ex-husband's adopted daughter!"

Even now, when I miss home, I just youtube Channel 8 dramas.

Okay, back to this one special issue. Non-JB dwellers, I'm pretty sure I lost you about 5 paragraphs ago. If any of you read this, I'm so sorry for boring you.

Let me describe this mythical issue to you. The concept for the issue came from an observation (by God knows who) that the actors in Mediacorp got significantly less endorsements compared to the actresses. So they got 8 actors to grace the cover, and in the cover story they each mimicked an endorsement of an actress. Eg. Christopher Lee remaking the jewellery ad by Fann Wong, lying in the back of a limo surrounded by powder blue Tiffany boxes. Julian Hee all covered with mud, mimcking the spa advertisment by Zoe Tay. My personal favourite was the Tay Ping Hui spoof of Huang Biren's fridge advertisment. I distinctly remember a picture of him actually sitting IN the fridge, and trying to act cute. Another picture had him leaning against the appliance, except being freakishly tall he actually dwarfed the fridge. Ahhhh Tay Ping Hui.

Yes, I want to get this issue because Tay Ping Hui is in it.

God or no God? That is the question

Everytime I go to class and learn something new about the human body, I stop for a moment and wonder how we came to be. Sometimes I am 99% sure that there is a higher being that created us, who meticulously created all these chemicals and elements which we are made up of. Someone who made our organs from scratch, building each artery and cell. How else would we exist? All these intricate systems that exist in us. Sometimes I find it hard to believe that all these was just created randomly.

Scientists argue that there is no God, and that the universe was created from the Big Bang, a random collision of particles. But who created these particles? Who decided they should have energy, so they can move around and knock into each other?

Then I think about all the people suffering in the world. HIV/AIDS, cancer, drought, floods, earthquakes. If a God were to take so much effort to create us, why would He just leave us alone while so many suffer?

Last night I had an epiphany. What if there is a God, who created us, but has forgotten that we exist? A God, who was only a child when we were made, and like how children are, moved us aside to play with other more fascinating objects.

Just a thought.

I've only been home for 1 day and it's been a flurry of activities ever since. It's only now that I'm actually starting to reflect on the placement there.

Being away from Melbourne for 3 weeks was definitely different. Not just a change in surroundings, lifestyle, but in myself as well.

Though it was a placement and I had to work a 40 hour week, I felt calmer. Sort of. I can't really explain it, but it felt nice to be out of my tiny room and to be in a new environment. Plus with 2 housemates whom I did not really socialise with past 8 pm I had a lot of time to be by myself and think. Really think, instead of being distracted with the internet or idiotic drunks shouting at their friends while crossing the road when the traffic light is red. Okay, so the TV was kind of a distraction, but it was less of one. Just take my word for it okay?

Most of the pondering was about my plans for next year, but I spent some time reflecting as well. Thinking about how much has changed since coming to Melbourne. Not just style wise, as KK likes to point out to me. Relationships with friends, classmates, even my family. Seems to me that there has been so much change within the last 3 years, compared to the other 17 years before that. It's even more scary when I try to think about how much more these things would change, and when it would stop changing.

That said, it IS good to be back home. Though the thinking is still going on. Eeek.

I was watching GREEK and a line someone said in this week's episode really stuck with me. She said that

That got me wondering, how do I know who to keep and who not to?

Is it even up to me?

It kinda freaks me out that this is the last year of my studying life. From December on it's going to be work work work for me. 9 to 5 weekdays and weekends spent recuperating.

Chances are I'll end up only having friends who work with me and not knowing anyone else.

EEEEEK.

When I was younger and just about to start university, all these random relatives/ friends of my parents would congratulate me before bestowing me with "precious" advice. 99% of the time they told me to enjoy my uni life, since it only goes downhill from there.

1% told me to find a rich boyfriend.

With just around 9 months to go, I'm starting to wonder if I've really made the most of my uni life. Should I have skipped more classes and did more fun activities?

(Answer to skipping more classes is probably no, since that would have meant me being stuck in uni for wayyyy longer, which is not a good thing when you have 2 younger brothers who want to go to uni too)

As mentioned in a previous post, I've definitely been doing less "fun stuff" the past year. Though I don't really see it as a bad thing, as the time was spent working, which would be playing a significant role come April.

However, it does provide a prediction of sorts into my social life post-university.

Oh well.

I hope I like the people I work with then.

It surprises me how 2009/2010 summer was the shortest holiday I spent home in Malaysia and yet I'm feeling much more homesick than I did the 2 previous summers.

‘Money is the root of all evil’. How far do you agree with this proverb?

It is a fact of life that money is essential. In these modern times, money has become a necessity. Without money, we could not survive. Money has invaded our lives and spreads its influence over us at any moment.

Like all other things, money brings the potential for goodness. Wealthy philanthropists use their vast wealth to relieve the plight of the unfortunate. Money helps the needy to be better equipped to survive the harsh world. The need for money motivates people to work tirelessly, increasing the world’s productivity, ensuring a more comfortable life for everyone. The desire for wealth also inspires many to produce inventions, and literature which have been a great contribution to the world. The quest for money can also give people a purpose in life, and if in moderation, this can be a positive influence on one’s life.

Yet all these benefits which money brings are overshadowed by the evils which arise from it. As the importance of money cannot be doubted, people have gone to great lengths to obtain it. Sometimes, their methods may even be illegal. The vast majority of crimes are committed in the name of money. Many who live in poverty struggle to make ends meet and so perform desperate actions such as burglary or snatch thefts in order to obtain money. Their unquenchable need for money blinds them to the negative repercussions of their atrocities. Others, although well-off, would feel as if money is never enough and would be involve in serious crimes such as drug trafficking and kidnapping in order to have an opportunity to hoard more wealth. No matter the crimes, it is clear that their actions which are fueled by money will cause much pain and suffering to the innocent. Their victims can attest to that.

The increase in crimes is not the only evidence of the corrupting power of money. Too many people now are materialistic, embarking on an endless pursuit of money and the perceived happiness that will come to it. Throughout this, they would neglect what truly matters in their lives, namely their family and friends. Too many children how lead their lives lacking their parents’ compassion, having a void in their souls, and would be at high risk of being involved in social ills. All this is the result of money.

Money has also become a major point of dispute. Many families, instead of having harmonious relationships among each other, bicker endlessly about financial affairs. In extreme cases, bonds between family members which have been forged by love and trust would be broken apart irreparably. The family unit which used to be held sacred has had its significance destroyed by money. Many friendships have also been tarnished this way as one or both parties would prize money over their friends.

In addition to that, money can also have a devastating effect on our psyche. Those who are not short on wealth would often be smug and arrogant, feeling as if they could lord over others. This behaviour would cause a rift between people and invoke feelings of envy and resentment, whereas those who lack money would spend their days in misery. Some of them would perform drastic acts as a result of their lack of satisfaction with their financial situation. Many lives have been lost because of this. One could imagine the deaths that could be averted if money did not consume humanity’s thoughts.

It is apparent that for all the good that money brings, it is responsible for much that is wrong and it truly is the root of all evil. We would do well not to worship money and place our focus on other, more meaningful things.

Pride and Prejudice

Yes, it's one of those times again, where I suddenly feel like blogging and you stumble upon my blog to find 3 consecutive posts.

This post was "inspired" by my brother Wei's observation that my family library holds 5 Pride and Prejudice books, and that my youngest brother has read it, before Wei and I have.

Finally I decided to find out what the fascination was with this work of Austen's and borrowed mum's DVDs of Pride and Prejudice.

Having seen the famous scene of Colin Firth jumping into a lake and emerging in a wet white shirt, I chose to watch the BBC's version first. BBC developed it into a series, rather than a movie, so it could really bring out every thing in the book.

Colin Firth did not disappoint at all. His potrayal of Mr Darcy was just how I had imagined it to be, after hearing about the book countless times. My favourite scene (other than the lake scene and the reaction of Elizabeth thereafter) was the scene where he first proposed marriage to her. You could really see how conflicted he felt, with his thinking that his family would not approve of their union. Jennifer Ehle who played Elizabeth was really good too, I was not fond of her at the start but she started to grow on me, with her witty comments, just like she grew on Darcy. The lady who played her mum played it to perfection as well, though her screeching got on my nerves.

After watching the BBC's Pride and Prejudice, the Keira Knightley one could only pale in comparison. Of course, it had a disadvantage, since it was only a 2 hour long movie and not a series.

And now, I'm off to (finally) read the book!

Introvert vs. Extrovert

I recently (1 hour ago) came to the conclusion that I'm probably not as extroverted as I was 3 years ago. Or maybe I never was as extroverted as I thought.

2009 was definitely a very introverted year for me. I started work, and decided to actually attend classes, except Pharmaceutics. In addition, it was my first year living outside IH. Hence the only people I meet would be those at school, at work, my housemate, my boyfriend and my uncle's family. Did not step into a club the whole year, only went to a bar 0.5 times for a sending off party (the girl was slightly to drunk to talk to), and 1 Christmas party (because it was free). Dinners were usually had on my own, or during a 10 minute break at work. Weekends were spent sleeping in and reading or on my laptop. Even when I had free time I preferred to spend it on my own rather than meeting up with friends. Most of the gatherings I attended was organised by other friends (Chu Jie, mostly). And I kinda liked it. Having a routine that was not disturbed by variables (friends who just cannot be punctual), a schedule that I could change whenever I wanted to. Having dinner at whatever time I want, having anything I want. Felt pretty good actually.

Compare this to my 1st and 2nd year in Melbourne. I was living in a college with 250++ other people, about 70% of whom I knew and 30% of whom I would talk to everyday. Every other day I'm standing with a large group of people trying to shush each other as we prepare to surprise someone on their birthday. There was always something to do somewhere with someone.

Is it a bad thing if I prefer my life now? Since within 2 years I'll probably only be left with 10 friends. Yet I just can't be bothered to go out there and meet up with friends anymore. Maybe I'm lazy. Maybe I'm just the sort of person who feels more comfortable with just a few close friends rather than a large group of people she can't talk to for more than 5 minutes before running out of things to talk about.

As I told Fangi, this is why I'm not cut out to be a high society wife. Having to entertain so many people with a smile of my face while we talk about things I don't really care about is just too tiring to even think about. Sorry Prince William.

I've decided to blog, not because I have exciting things to talk about. It was more of a "Meh, why not. I sit in front of the laptop the whole day anyway" kind of thinking.

The holidays have been EXACTLY how I predicted.

10% of the time meeting friends/ doing exciting stuff

10% running errands and handling boring procedural stuff e.g. update passport/driver's license/bank FD

5% hanging out with XinWei

0.005% hanging out with XinKit (Yeah, he's this 16 year old that happens to have the same biological parents I have, yet turned out completely different from me, such that I do not talk to him, unless we are arguing).

10% spending quality time with Mum

0.5% spending quality time with Dad (thank you machinery at the electrical plant that decided to throw a tantrum just as my Dad is coming home to spend Christmas, I only saw my Dad for 4 days this year thanks to you.)

Remaining time is spent sleeping, and on the internet.

What I do on the Internet:

Play FB games e.g. Country Story, Pet Society, CafeWorld, Restaurant City, almost any game you can think of. Except FarmVille.

Read Fanfiction.

Play Pyramids on Neopets.

Check e-mails (99% junk, 1% from my Dad)

Read Asian entertainment news

Read and update Twitter

Read manga

Play FB games again

Was going to try to take a picture of this HUGE sign they placed outside our shop to advertise that we are open till 10 pm on weeknights, but they moved it away before I brought my camera to work. Christmas shopping = torture

So far I've settled 3 presents out of 14. Just shoot me. It's hard enough trying to guess what a person would want for their birthday, but when you have to do it for ALL of them at the same bloody time in a shopping centre that is so brightly lit it hurts your eyes and when christmas carols are playing over and over and over again, it's just impossible.

With that said, I will still try to finish my shopping on time, preferably before heading home on the 16th of December.

Suggestions for presents are very much welcome, as long as it's:

a. within my budget

b. not anything to do with twilight

c. not lingerie

d. not sex paraphernalia (I'm not buying anyone a blowup doll for Christmas!!)

Only good thing I can say about Christmas shopping (other than imagining the happy smiles on everyone's faces when they open the present I thoughtfully got for them, coz that's sappy) is that it's actually giving me something to do.

Which is good, since I'm perpetually bored out of my mind.

Just have to remind myself of this point when I'm actually doing Christmas shopping.

Admittedly, it IS hard to fit everything you want to say into 140 characters. I mean, replying someone would already mean about 5-10 characters are wasted. God forbid the person has a looooong username eg. Celine aka celinemlchu. Or shitmydadsays. The latter's actually getting a book and TV deal just from posting what his 73-year old father says. Seriously.

Anyway....

Exams are finally over, this is DEFINITELY the toughest semester yet. My workmates all try to comfort me by telling me it's the hardest semester, and that it only gets easier from here. Hmmm. I will tell you if that's true in 2 years' time.

Papers in decreasing difficulty: Pharmaceutics (hardest, thanks to Peter Stewart) > Pharmacy Practice (Louis Roller's ethics question came close to PS) > Clinical Pharmacy > Pharmacology > Med Chem (thank you my awesome MedChem course coordinator for re-using questions)

Am planning post-exam activities to maximise my day. For example, I spent 5 hours at the karaoke lounge with XinNee, Jeremy, PeiXian, ChuJie and JiaHong belting tunes at the top of our lungs, some as old as we are, some as recent as last week. Oh, and not forgetting Jeremy's performance of dancing to "Sorry, Sorry", which I made him promise to do since before Paper No.4 aka Pharmaceutics.

The high lasted throughout dinner (for CJ, JH and me at least), and also the post-dinner walk to Freddo's for a much needed gelati. Post-gelati walk was where we ended up agreeing to the idea of having a flashmob in Fed Square for CJ's birthday next year (I know, what did we get ourselves into?!)

What was supposed to be a short discussion about something I cannot put here on my blog, ended up being a 3 hour long chit-chatting session about relationships. Nice.

Conclusively, it's been a good start to post-exam celebrations, if you ignore the fact that I went to work after my exam Thursday morning on 4 hours of sleep.

Tomorrow's plan: To buy me the J. Society Enigma Low Super Slim Bleach Jeans from Just Jeans tomorrow. Then off to the MYER Christmas Parade (34 degrees tomorrow though), followed by a trip to Bardot's factory outlet store to shop. Hope that all works out.

Hey there guys. Not much real blogging nowadays. Probably because there isn't a way for me to update you all about my life without me falling asleep typing out, my life is THAT boring right now. Uni, work, studying for exams, watching TV shows on my laptop.

Plus, I haven't had any epiphanies to share. Kinda hard to have one when you're doing the same thing day after day. Unless you count last night where I had an epiphany about not having epiphanies. Or the one where it suddenly occurred to me that chocolate mooncake with peanut filling tastes a lot like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

Hopefully I'll feel less dead when exams are finished, and I go home and see my family :) Did I mention my brother got into UWA? Oh, and that he's awesomely cool now! Looks like IMU's doing wonders for him, not study-wise since he seems to be hating pathology. He's joined a mountain climbing and hiking club, started jogging, and is actually out most of the time with friends! So hard to catch him nowadays, be it on MSN or by phone. Busy bee that one is. As compared to me. I feel 20 years older than him now.

So hang in there my loyal readers! I will, hopefully, be back.
